Law and Martial Arts. What do these two topics have in common, you ask? As far as I can tell, nothing whatsoever. However, as these two activities are the two most central issues in my personal life (save only my wife and daughter and you probably don’t want to hear about them) I’ll attempt to keep a running commentary on what goes on as I encounter problems, issues, events, happenings, situations, conversations, questions, and anything else that comes to mind while trying, generally, to stay on track of the two reasons for this thing even existing. My main intent with this Blog is to spotlight the mostly- amusing and sometimes-frustrating anecdotes of the human condition I encounter through the “practice” of law and the “practice” of martial arts. I say and highlight practice to make sure you understand I don’t know how to do either, yet. Your reading is welcomed, of course, and likewise commentary is appreciated. You might imagine that martial artists everywhere are like Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan, even Jet Li, if you’ve watched too many movies. Or, if you haven’t lived under a rock for the past five years, then you should be at least passing familiar with the incredibly dangerous-seeming combatants of the Ultimate Fighting Championships and its associated spin-offs. Likewise, you make think that lawyers are like those seen on TV, always smooth and polished and wearing very well-tailored suits as they strive for justice in all things …. Unless you’re watching a caricature of the seedy shyster involved in swindling someone out of a frivolous check after some ambulance-chasing … but we won’t talk about that. The problem is, none of the above televised representations are the truth. Well, not all the time, anyway. I’ll be attempting to share insights into the world of a lifetime martial artist and lawyer, and still try to keep you entertained for the few minutes each week that you take to read this ongoing essay about life and its imperfections. Wow, that last sentence sounded deep. I might get sued for misrepresentation.
